There are wedding venues, and then there is The Grand Pier.
Standing out over the Bristol Channel at Weston-super-Mare, this iconic Somerset landmark provides one of the most unusual and memorable settings for a wedding in the South West.
This wedding was a fantastic opportunity to capture the atmosphere, emotion and personality of the day while making the most of everything that makes a Grand Pier wedding different.
As a photographer based in Weston-super-Mare, photographing a wedding at such an iconic local landmark is particularly special.
The Grand Pier describes itself as a wedding venue that is “anything but ordinary”, and it is easy to see why.
Located on the seafront at Weston-super-Mare, the Pier extends approximately a quarter of a mile out to sea, providing panoramic views across the Bristol Channel. Its wedding spaces include the elegant Tiffany Room, with large windows and sea views, alongside other flexible event spaces.
For a wedding photographer, that creates some fantastic opportunities.
A Grand Pier wedding can include:
📸 Romantic couple portraits
🌊 Dramatic coastal wedding photography
❤️ Natural and candid moments
💍 Ceremony photography
👨👩👧👦 Family and group photographs
🥂 Drinks reception photographs
🌅 Sea and sunset portraits
🎉 Wedding reception photography
💃 Evening celebrations and dancing
🎡 Fun photographs inspired by the unique surroundings
The result is a wedding gallery that feels as individual as the venue itself.
One of the things I love about photographing weddings at The Grand Pier is that there is so much personality around you.
This isn’t a traditional country house wedding.
It’s Weston-super-Mare.
It’s the sea, the beach, the pier, the lights, the atmosphere and the unmistakable character of one of Somerset’s best-known seaside landmarks.
That gives us the opportunity to create wedding photographs that are completely different from a conventional wedding venue.
And that’s exactly what I want.
Your wedding photographs should reflect you, rather than looking like everybody else’s wedding.
My approach combines documentary-style wedding photography with creative portrait photography.
I’ll capture the important moments as they happen, while also looking for the smaller interactions that tell the real story of your day.
The emotion during the ceremony.
The reaction of your family.
The laughter between friends.
The moment you realise you’re finally married.
The hugs.
The speeches.
The dancing.
And all the little moments you might not even notice while you’re busy enjoying yourself.
I’ll also create beautiful portraits of the two of you, using the Pier, the sea and the surrounding Weston-super-Mare seafront to create something a little different.
The Grand Pier’s position over the Bristol Channel creates opportunities for photographs with a real sense of place.
Rather than treating the venue as simply a backdrop, I like to incorporate its character into the photographs.
The sea.
The coastline.
The Pier structure.
The lights.
The architecture.
The atmosphere.
Depending on the time of day and the weather, we can create everything from bright and colourful seaside photographs to dramatic coastal portraits.
And, of course, Weston’s famous sunsets can provide another opportunity for something special.
I’m Ian Phillips, the photographer behind Ian Phillips Photography, based in Weston-super-Mare.
The Grand Pier is not simply another venue on my wedding list.
It’s part of the town where I live and work.
That local knowledge means I understand the character of Weston-super-Mare and the opportunities available around the seafront, beach and town.
It also means I can help couples think beyond the obvious photographs and make their wedding gallery feel genuinely connected to the place where they celebrated.
When you’re choosing a wedding photographer, you’re trusting someone to capture moments that can never be repeated.
Professional experience matters.
I’m proud to be an award-winning and published photographer, with national and international recognition.

But awards aren’t what make a wedding photograph meaningful.
The most important thing is understanding people.
Knowing when to direct you.
Knowing when to leave you alone.
Watching for the moments happening around you.
And creating photographs that bring the memories back every time you look at them.
A wedding at The Grand Pier deserves photography that matches the personality of the venue.
My style is:
Relaxed enough to enjoy.
Professional enough to trust.
Creative enough to remember.
I don’t want you spending your wedding day posing for hours.
I want you enjoying yourselves while I capture what happens naturally — alongside creating a small collection of beautiful, creative portraits you’ll treasure.
If you’re planning your wedding at The Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, I’d love to hear about your plans.
Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a larger wedding with family and friends, the Pier offers an opportunity to create something genuinely different.
And as a Weston-super-Mare wedding photographer, I’d love to tell your story in a way that captures both your relationship and the character of this incredible local landmark.
